Mapping species richness of plant families in European vegetation

چکیده

Aims Biodiversity is traditionally studied mostly at the species level, but biogeographical and macroecological studies higher taxonomic levels can provide valuable insights into evolutionary processes large spatial scales. Our aim was to assess representation of vascular plant families within different vegetation formations across Europe. Location Methods We used a data set 816,005 plots from European Vegetation Archive (EVA). For each plot, we calculated relative richness family as number belonging that divided by total species. mapped richness, averaged all in 50 km × grid cells, for broad habitat groups: forests, grasslands, scrub wetlands. also absolute Shannon diversity index family. Results produced 522 maps mean 152 occurring found distinct patterns many combinations groups. The resulting series freely available, both images GIS layers. Conclusions revealed suggest community level reflects history individual families. believe associated inspire further strengthen ongoing integration phylogenetic, functional concepts.

Effects of ‘Target’ Plant Species Body Size on Neighbourhood Species Richness and Composition in Old-Field Vegetation

Competition is generally regarded as an important force in organizing the structure of vegetation, and evidence from several experimental studies of species mixtures suggests that larger mature plant size elicits a competitive advantage. However, these findings are at odds with the fact that large and small plant species generally coexist, and relatively smaller species are more common in virtu...

Correlates of species richness in North American bat families

Aim A near universal truth in North America is that species richness increases from the Arctic Circle to the Central American tropics. Latitude is regarded as a major explanatory variable in species density, although it is only a surrogate for underlying ecological variables. I aimed to elucidate those underlying ecological variables that are associated with variation in bat species richness ac...

Location of plant species in Norway gathered as a part of a survey vegetation mapping programme

Georeferenced species data have a wide range of applications and are increasingly used for e.g. distribution modelling and climate change studies. As an integrated part of an on-going survey programme for vegetation mapping, plant species have been recorded. The data described in this paper contains 18.521 registrations of plants from 1190 different circular plots throughout Norway. All species...

Response of Plant Height, Species Richness and Aboveground Biomass to Flooding Gradient along Vegetation Zones in Floodplain Wetlands, Northeast China

Flooding regime changes resulting from natural and human activity have been projected to affect wetland plant community structures and functions. It is therefore important to conduct investigations across a range of flooding gradients to assess the impact of flooding depth on wetland vegetation. We conducted this study to identify the pattern of plant height, species richness and aboveground bi...

Plant species richness and ecosystem multifunctionality in global drylands.

Experiments suggest that biodiversity enhances the ability of ecosystems to maintain multiple functions, such as carbon storage, productivity, and the buildup of nutrient pools (multifunctionality). However, the relationship between biodiversity and multifunctionality has never been assessed globally in natural ecosystems. We report here on a global empirical study relating plant species richne...
